Foundational Pillars: Non-negotiable Elements

The principles articulated in the PeopleOps Manifesto serve as a guide to unique and impactful approaches for People Operations. However, it is important to clarify that these principles operate within a framework of foundational requirements. These foundational elements are non-negotiable prerequisites that underpin any organization’s vision, values, and culture, which vary from company to company.

The manifesto focuses on differentiating and elevating the practice of People Operations. It inherently assumes the presence of these foundational requirements and therefore considers them out of scope for the purposes of discussing PeopleOps.

Below are some elements generally considered foundational, listed alphabetically:

Confidentiality: Keeping all employee data and company information secure and private.

Diversity and Inclusion: Creating a workplace where everyone feels welcome and their views and valued.

Equal Opportunity: A commitment to providing equal access to opportunities for all individuals, regardless of age, sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, or any other legally protected characteristic.

ESG Commitments: Following ethical, social, and environmental standards that go beyond making a profit.

Ethical Conduct: Upholding the highest ethical standards and integrity in all business interactions and operations.

Legal Compliance: Following all local, state, and federal employment laws that relate to employment and business.

Quality: This encompasses non-negotiable standards of excellence for every job or project.

Respect: Treating everyone with fairness and valuing their contributions.

Safety: Making sure the workplace is safe physically and emotionally for everyone.

Transparency: Being open and honest about how decisions are made and provide a framework for how information is shared.

Work Location: Setting the rules for where and how work will be done, like remote, or hybrid or in-person.

Recognizing these as foundational requirements allows the PeopleOps Manifesto to focus on providing specific, actionable guidelines that go beyond the basics to shape the organization’s culture and operations in a distinctive manner.
